Born on September 1, 1941 in Hartford, Marco was the son of the late Cosmo “Gus” and Domenica “Minnie” (Cersosimo) Maio. Marco earned his degrees in Nursing from the New Britain Central School of Nursing and the St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH. During the Vietnam War, he served in the US Air Force and continued his honorable service in the Army Reserve Nurse Corps. During his career, Marco also did some graduate work at the UConn School of Nursing and continued to work in the nursing field until his retirement from St. Francis Hospital.
Marco was a member of the Wethersfield Chapter of UNICO and the Sons of Italy in South Carolina. With a deep love of the Christmas Holiday and a wish to spread holiday cheer, Marco became a member of the Professional Santa Claus Association and was known throughout the community for his many appearances at local events and private home gatherings, including the Annual Christmas on Main St. in Wethersfield.
He was truly devoted to his family and will be sadly missed by his sons, Christopher Marc Maio and his wife Kelly Shea Maio of South Windsor, CT and Brandon Marc Maio and his wife Mimi McArthur Maio of Sonoma, CA. He also leaves his cherished grandchildren Christopher Shea Maio, Kaitryn Shea Maio, Sabine Ruth Maio and Holden Marco Maio along with many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Marco was predeceased by his siblings, Dominic Maio and Carmela Fitzgerald and his first wife Ruth Mary (Gates) Maio.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 16th at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 17th at Christ the King Parish (Corpus Christi Church), 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield at 10am. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial with military honors will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill.
