William (Bill) F. Thomson passed away on November 21, 2024 lovingly surrounded by his family. Bill was born November 6, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. He is survived by his wife Lauren (nee Lichtenberger), his son Jaime, daughter Kristen Maure and husband Chris, his son Kevin Thomson and wife Melissa, and son Jeff Biroc and wife Yvelisse, 8 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bill entered the United States Marine Corps after High School, serving in Vietnam with “A” Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines as an infantryman, from November 1968 until November 1969. Bill extended his tour in Vietnam and was assigned with “A” Company 1st Battalion, 4th Marines during his extended deployment.
He continued his service in the Marine Corps, first at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina upon his return from Vietnam, before being transferred to the Philadelphia Naval Base as a military policeman. In 1972, he became the youngest Marine at that time to be assigned to recruiting duty. He served four years in Chicago, Il before serving an additional eight years on recruiting duty in Philadelphia, PA.
Upon leaving active duty in the Marine Corps, he became the Deputy Director for the New Jersey State Lottery. He was councilman in Monroe Township, NJ and in 1985 he was voted Gloucester County Legislator of the year.
Bill’s strong conviction of faith with his love for Biblical truth and politics he was led to Christian Coalition of America. He was the National Field Director under the leadership of Roberta Combs. He worked tirelessly for Judeo-Christian values across the United States. He never missed the opportunity to share his faith and values in the many rooms of the U.S. Congress.
After he retired, he continued to work for Veterans issues. In 2008, he was appointed to serve on Governor Corzine’s Yellow Ribbon Commission, which he was given the responsibility to develop a program to treat returning National Guard members returning from the battlefield for potential PTSD problems.
In 2017 Bill was elected to sit on the National Board of Directors for the Veterans of Foreign Wars as New Jersey’s representative and was re-elected to serve an additional four years in 2021.
In 2019 Bill was nominated by Governor Murphy to serve on the Paramus Veterans Home Advisory Board.
Bill has been awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/Device, Vietnam Service Medal w/4*, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Bill is a member the Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled Veterans of America. He was a loyal member of the Bergen County Republican Organization where he served as Sergeant of Arms.
Services will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024 from 4PM-8 PM at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Road, Westwood, NJ 07675. Interment with Military Honors will be on Tuesday, November 26, at 1:30PM at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Wrightstown, NJ 08562
