“James H. Sung was our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and husband of our beloved mother, grandmother, and “auntie,” Elizabeth Sung. He was an engineer with a long career, most notably with NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, supporting aerospace research, technology, and space exploration. Born in 1917, in the Anhui Province of China, he came to the United States on a graduate scholarship to Ohio State University. He lived a long and well- traveled life, sharing his wisdom, courage, life experience, generosity, and great sense of humor, with everyone. Over the years he supported, welcomed and sponsored the rest of the extended family, in China or Taiwan, to join him in California, including his nephew, C.K. He always had a sparkle in his eyes, and could charm any baby or bring laughter to young children. He enjoyed debating the news of the day, dancing to big band music (in his younger days,) traveling, and sharing good Chinese food with family and many friends. His fluency in both Mandarin and English was legendary. Always proud of his family, and the life he gave us in his adopted country, he was especially overjoyed at the birth of his grandchildren. Together with Elizabeth, they enjoyed traveling to many different countries, including a few trips back to China. A quiet, but highly intellectual man, interested in politics, culture, history, Chinese food and art, he was an avid reader, enjoying both American and Chinese newspapers, daily. Although he lived with Alzheimer's disease for many years, he always recognized us and remembered his extensive family.
He is survived by his two daughters, Ellen and Alice, and four granddaughters, Nicole and Alexandra, and twins, Athena and Alethea, as well as nephew "C.K." Sung, and many other nieces and nephews. Together now with our beloved mother, grandmother, and “auntie,” Elizabeth Sung, they will be missed, but never forgotten. “
