Evelyn Irene Johnson

As a girl she enjoyed being a song leader at Newport Harbor High School Class of 1956. She remained very involved with the school as an active member of the reunion committee.

After high school she attended Orange Coast College. That is where she met and married her soulmate Gary “Griz” Johnson who worked for Major League Baseball and preceded her in death. They both were members of the OCC Alumni Association, and both were inducted into the OCC Hall of Fame.

She spent her career as a manager for Newport Stationers until her retirement.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Costa Mesa where she was on various boards and enjoyed many years as a member of their hand bell choir.

On May 7th, 2024, Evie passed away peacefully in her sleep. She is survived by her son Gary Matthew Johnson and (wife) Dea, Daughter Julia Case and Grandson Drake Brunette, and Daughter Jill Mendonca, (husband) Sonny, and Granddaughters Kaila and Leah.

Also survived by her brother John Taylor, sister Vicki Isbell and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
