Don passed away on May 16, 2022, at his home in Westlake Village, California at the age of 93.
Don was born in Norfolk, Nebraska on May 28, 1928. His family moved to Lincoln, NE when he was twelve years old. He graduated from Lincoln High School, where he met his future wife, Virginia (Gina) Robbins, and attended the University of Nebraska, at Lincoln, where his love of the Nebraska Cornhusker College Football Team began.
In 1946, Don joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Zama, Japan as part of the Occupation Forces under command of General Douglas MacArthur. As a World War II Veteran, Don is honored with his name entered in the Registry of Remembrances at the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.
Returning from Japan in late 1947, Don and Gina married on December 6th. The newly married couple lived in Lincoln, NE where Don was a fireman for the Lincoln Fire Department.
In 1955, Don and Gina moved to Santa Monica, California, where Don became an agent for Farmers Insurance. He would go on to have a long and prosperous career of 54 years with Farmers, earning their highest achievements, including Toppers Club, and three-time Presidents Council Member.
In 1959, the family moved to Sherman Oaks, and in 1965, relocated to Granada Hills until 1975, when they moved to their dream home in Westlake Village.
Don was a longtime Al Malaikah Shriner, member of the Westlake Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore, and member of The Westlakers. As a longstanding resident of Westlake Village, Don also served on the Board of Representatives for Westlake Lake Management Association. In 2020, he received the Senior Citizen of the Year Award from the City of Westlake Village for his volunteer contributions.
He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Gina, visiting the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and many states throughout the U.S.
Don was an avid sports enthusiast, playing basketball for his high school team and the U.S. Army Team, followed by golf in later years. He loved watching his favorite sports teams, the Dodgers, Rams, and his beloved Nebraska Cornhusker College Football Team.
Don is survived by Gina, his endearing wife of almost 75 years, his three children, Richard Meyer, Linda McCreadie and Cheryl Toller. Seven grandchildren, Mary Green, LeeAnn Taylor, John McCreadie, Scott McCreadie, Joel Meyer, Justin Toller, and Jared Toller. And nine great grandchildren, Savannah Green, Sarah Meyer, Richard Meyer, Amelia Green, Abigail Meyer, Karsyn Toller, Kensley Toller, Robyn Meyer and Vivian Meyer.
To those who knew Don, he was an excellent provider, a hard worker, generous, and always willing to help a friend or neighbor.
He will be deeply missed by us all.
