Opal spent most of her life in Westlake, where she was a devoted member of the Eastern Star Westlake Chapter #228 for many years. A woman of deep faith, she loved her family unconditionally and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Opal’s life was an inspiration, encouraging everyone around her to be better, kinder people. While the world is poorer for her passing, her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Polly Elizabeth Hillebrandt Baker and husband Paul; son, William "Bill" Smith; grandchildren, Angela Townsend, William Smith and wife Nicki, Tammy Poe and husband Gary, Christina Guarino and husband Michael, Heather Dautriel, Hank Thornton and Joshua Smith and wife Amy; 18 great grandchildren; 19 great great grandchildren; and sisters, Frances McVey and Mary Jones.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William "Blackie" Baldwin Evers and Luetta Evers; husband of over 50 years, Hobart Shelton Smith; son, James Paul Smith; grandson, Nathaniel Smith; and sister, Marjorie Boles.
The family will welcome relatives and friends at Hixson Funeral Home of Westlake on Thursday, August 29, 2024 beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will resume on Friday, August 30, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. with an Eastern Star service to be held at 10:00 a.m. immediately followed by a Celebration of Life in the funeral home. Burial will be immediately following at Westlake Memorial Park. Brother Oliver McGuire will officiate at the services.
