It is with profound sorrow that the Matheson family announces our mother’s passing at the age of 78 on February 12, 2013 in North Vancouver after a courageous struggle with a long illness. She was surrounded by the love of her four “boys” and her devoted husband of 55 years, Dr. Donald Matheson. Missing her deeply are her husband; sons Cam (Cathy), Craig (Darius), Bruce (Shereen) and Ian (Alicia); sister Mary Ellen Polak; brother Bob Gibson (Patricia); and cherished grandchildren Alexa, Graham, Kyle, Ryan, Cole, Graydon, and Kaia. Born in Virden, Manitoba on January 20, 1935, Ruth was the middle child of Wallace and Mabel Gibson. She grew up in Port Arthur, Ontario and always carried a special place in her heart for her summers spent at the cottage on Two Island Lake. She attended Havergal College in Toronto and then UBC in Vancouver, where she met our Dad. They married and settled in West Vancouver. Ruth was a special woman who held strong beliefs and opinions. Finding humor in her daily life, she was a great storyteller who often added her own special flavor. Mom kept busy with her boys’ many activities and always welcomed our friends, making our house the site of many parties and a safe haven for some. As a young woman she spent many hours volunteering at the Junior League Thrift Shop as well as the old and new Vancouver Museum. She developed many lifelong friendships through her love of bridge and reading. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at Hollyburn Country Club on Friday, March 1 from 1 to 4. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the North Shore Hospice Society. For those wishing to share a memory of Ruth, please go to www.hollyburnfunerals.com
