MacPherson, Paul Ronald – Husband. Father. Stepfather. Grandfather. Professor. Entrepreneur. Philanthropist. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Paul MacPherson. Paul passed peacefully on August 18, 2021, at the North Shore Hospice in North Vancouver, BC with his sons, daughter and stepdaughter by his side. Paul is survived by his three children Paula (Georges Turgeon), Duncan (Sheila MacPherson), Robert and his stepdaughter Adrienne Bull; as well as his grandchildren Connor and Joshua Paul, and his step grandchildren, Christopher, Joshua John, and Amber Rose (Turgeon). He was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley Isabella (née Young) on April 24, 2021. They married in 1986 and settled in her home in West Vancouver. Together, they travelled the world for both business and pleasure. Thank you, Shirley, for making our father so happy. Paul was born on December 9, 1933, in Campbellford, Ontario to Berthold and Pearl. He was the youngest of two children. His older sister, Diane Faye, predeceased him in 1989. A child of the Great Depression, Paul faced many obstacles in his early life. He persevered knowing that an education would be his way out and up. In 1957, he graduated with a B.A. in Geography from McMaster University. After a stint at Imperial Oil as a sales rep, he went on to graduate school. In 1963, he obtained an MBA at University of Western Ontario. After 14 years as a tenured Professor of Business at the University of Guelph, he purchased the Valcom Manufacturing Group specializing in broadband antennas for the military. In 1985, he opened Valcom Consulting Group in Ottawa to deliver professional service needs of the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defense.
Success did not change Paul – as thrift runs in his blood. He took great pleasure in philanthropy, giving to hospitals, hospices, children’s camps, universities, and many other organizations. The gifts that gave him his greatest joy were the establishment of the Paul R. MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching as well as the Paul R. MacPherson Chair in Indigenous Studies at McMaster U – his alma mater.
Thanks go to the staff at Lions Gate Hospital and the North Shore Hospice. A deep debt of gratitude goes to Rose Betts for helping, for caring, and being a constant in Paul’s and Shirley’s lives in the past 2 years.
Dad, Grandpa, you taught us love, you taught us strength. You showed us the importance of education, hard work and family. You leave a legacy we will never forget. Go in peace, you have earned your sleep.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation (lghfoundation.com), a favourite charity of Paul and Shirley’s.
