Mary, known to her family as Mom, Nana and Great Mary, died peacefully on February 15, 2020 at the age of 95. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Robert "Bob", infant son Raymond, daughter-in-law Pina, and sister, Jean Florence Mathisen. Mary was lovingly survived by her children Jeanette (Lorenz) and Ron (Patsy), granddaughters Kirsten (CB), Robyn (Chris), Laura (Rob) and Kathleen and great-grandchildren Luke, Reilly, Kelsey, Adam, Emily, Ryder and Erik.
Mary was born in Calgary and the family moved to Vancouver in 1938. After the war, she taught in Langley prior to marrying the returning veteran from down the street, Robert "Bob " Rogers. While Bob continued his university studies, Mary began working at the Spencer's Fancy Cake counter. This no doubt fostered Mary's sweet tooth which remained with her throughout her life. After Bob's graduation, the pair welcome three children, Jeanette, Ron and Raymond. The family first moved to Princeton, B.C. and eventually to Trail, B.C. where the pair would raise their children until Bob's retirement in 1977. Bob and Mary returned to Vancouver, where Mary embraced becoming a playground supervisor for 10 years at Maple Grove and University Hill schools.
Mary loved to travel and had many memorable trips and cruises with Bob. As her grandchildren grew older, they too became Mary’s travel partners. In her later years, Mary returned to her passion of drawing and painting. She took many classes, including Chinese art. Many friends and family have been gifted with Mary’s beautiful artwork throughout the years. In her final years, Mary was able to stay closely connected to her family through weekly phone and Skype calls.
In the words of her great-grandkids “WE LOVE YOU GREAT MARY!”
Donations can be made in Mary’s name to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation.
