January 14, 1936 - July 22, 2021
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Kenneth (Ken) Smith on July 22, 2021, at
85 years. He leaves behind his wife, Gerry, his children, Kathy (David), Jaye (Anne Sofie), and
Mark, and his grandchildren, Matthew (Stina), Jeremy, Nicholas, and Allegra.
Born on the prairies, Ken lived most of his life in West Vancouver and loved the landscape and
views he saw every day. He always counted the freighters as he and Gerry walked the seawalk in
West Van early every morning, stopping to chat with people along the way. He lived the life he
wanted. He retired early at age 45 from McMillan Bloedel to attend UBC, graduating with a BA in Fine
Arts. For many years he loved to run on the seawalk in West Vancouver, and in later years to
lawn bowl with Gerry and all his friends at the West Van Lawn Bowling Club. He looked forward to the
social times after bowling, enjoying a glass of wine, banter, and laughter with friends, as well as taking
part in other club events. Ken loved to jive and often danced with Gerry when the mood hit in their
apartment, which he so loved, or near the stage at Harmony Arts if the music was just right.
Ken and Gerry enjoyed many travels, including trips to Europe. Highlights were attending theatre in
London, seeing the paintings he loved in France and Italy, visiting family in Norway, travelling to most
of the Greek Islands (favourites Paros and Naxos), and enjoying the exotic sights, culture, and people
of Turkey. Ken will be missed by his family, his lawn bowling friends, and the early morning seawalk community. No service by request.
