Vaughn Nolan Mott, 87, passed away on the evening of October 6, 2024 in South Jordan, Utah. He was born and raised in Vernal, Utah to William and Doris Mott. Vaughn was always big in stature and worked hard his whole life. As a young man he worked with his dad and grandpa at the sawmill and knew how to drive a dump truck at the age of 14. He would cut hay, worked as a projectionist at the movie theater and always had a great work ethic which he taught to his kids by his example.
In elementary school he was in class with a cute girl named Margie Hacking but it wouldn’t be until High School that their love blossomed and they were married and sealed in the Manti Temple on June 1, 1956. They enjoyed 68 wonderful years of marriage. Surviving relatives include his Wife: Margie H. Mott; Children: Lynn Mott (LaDell), Lori Broome (Gary), Christine Gallagher (David), Clark Mott (Shelly), Eric Mott (Rebekah), Heather Farrimond (Rod); Siblings: Niles Mott (Connie), Max Mott (Connie), Merlin Mott (Barbara); Grandchildren: 19; Great Grandchildren: 23; and 1 great great-granddaughter.
Vaughn worked hard to support his family his whole life. He spent many years on the road as a truck driver hauling crude oil in the oil field. He and his brother, Niles, started their own company called Mott Brothers Trucking. He would sometimes take his kids with him and all have fond memories going on adventures with him in the big trucks.
He loved the scouting program and loved the boys he worked with. Pinewood derbys, campouts, and sledding down the canyon by moonlight are some of his favorite memories. He went to the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Washington DC four different times and was awarded The Silver Beaver Award for his lifetime commitment to the program.
Vaughn liked to work with his hands. He built 2 homes and became a machinist by trade. He could fix just about anything, cars, tractor parts for the farmers and any projects on his “honey do” list. He made custom swing sets for his kids that were the envy of any neighbor kid and adult because they were big, tall and strong enough you could go as high as you wanted.
He was a great storyteller and lover of poetry. You could often find cards around the house as he would try and memorize poems and then recite them for the kids on drives and at family gatherings. He even started writing his own poetry that included many childhood memories and experiences he’s had throughout his life.
And oh, he loved a good prank, whether it was Vaseline on a co-worker’s phone earpiece or putting a sardine in a potted plant to start smelling days later. In the summer he and Margie would get on their motorcycle, and he would drive around the neighborhood while she sprayed unsuspecting neighbors that were outside.
He lived a life of service. Always helping others with projects, never asking for payment to fix broken equipment or just saying it would cost an apple pie. He served as Bishop and he and Margie served 2 missions at the Heber Valley Girls Camp. He was faithful to the end. He loved his Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. He never wavered in his faith. He often shared his wisdom and testimony with his children and grandchildren.
Vaughn loved his family. He was proud of his children, and he adored his grandchildren. We will miss him terribly and will look forward to the day we can see and hug him again.
Preceded in death by his Parents: William Vaughn Mott & Doris Alberta Slaugh.
