I teach at Magna Elementary and loved all the years of friendship I had with Arlene.  She was an excellent teacher who had high expectations for all of her students.  She was so talented and everything she did, she did well.  Arlene had a wonderful sense of humor.  She always had us laughing everyday in the faculty room. I share a March 11 birthday with Arlene and I will always think of her on that day.  I will really miss Arlene.

I will remember Arlene as a respected colleague with a fierce devotion to educating the children placed in her class.

I loved working with Arlene at Magna Elementary. She was one of the first people to welcome me and ask if I needed anything. I always admired her grace, beauty, and love. She will be missed.

Almost 7 years ago to the day Arlene played the piano at Debbie's and my wedding reception.  We will miss her very much.  She had a great sense of humor and wonderful musical talents.  She was one of a kind.  Our heartfelt sympathies go out to her family.

  I just found out that you have left us for a better place...such fond memories of visiting teaching (for better AND worse), of chatting at the mailbox, and listening to you play the organ.  I am blessed to have known you.

I know you will be missed. You are a great lady and I appreciate your friendship. I will always remember all the times we gathered in front of your house as neighbors and friends. Every time I see a “scotty” I'm reminded of you. Our prayers of comfort and condolences go to your family.

I cherished the time I spent with Arlene at Magna Elementary.  I have many good memories and I will miss her deeply. I pray for peace and comfort for you, her family.

I met Arlene in 1965 at ISU.  We both were 20 and became instant soulmates.  We were roommates in college, moved to L.A. together, and lived together there off and on.  She was and always will be my very closest and best friend. I last visited her October 2009 and we were planning on her and Karen coming to Portland this summer. This has been so unexpected and devastating it is hard to find words. I have never felt such pain or loss, tears will not stop.  Arlene had the best smile, craziest sense of humor, most beautiful voice and was the most unconditional and loving friend anyone could hope for.  I was so looking forward to her visit this summer....we kept waiting "til we retire" - this is so unfair, she never got to enjoy the retirement she taught 44 years to earn...so unfair.  Her reunion with Zina, Grant, Leroy and her beloved McDuffs will be the good part of this story.  I will forever love her, miss her and be so glad I had the privilege and pleasure of her friendship.  May God bless Arlene, she truly was the best......

Ms. Short you were my teacher at magna elementary in 4th grade and you were the funniest i knew. You will be missed greatly. I still remember how you would teach me cursive and your love of Scottish terriers. Hope you are in a better place now. :)

I learned yesterday my closest and best friend  Mary "Arlene" Short, had just passed away. We met in college in 1965 when we both were 20. We became soulmates immediately and that continued until now. We were roommates at ISU, moved to L.A. together in 1968, and were roommates off and on there, also. Last time we talked, she was plannng on grabbing Karen [a "big" sister we all loved:)] and coming here to Portland, OR to visit us this summer. We had last been to see her October 2009.  My heart aches like it never has, the tears will not stop. This is so sudden,  unexpected and devastating.  We always told each other of our love, but I never got to tell her goodbye. This is so painful. She [and we] had so many plans for our retirement years. We put them off too long..... I will always be thankful for the pleasure and privilege of knowing and loving her so.  May God bless Arlene, she was the best........absolutely the best.  All my prayers and hugs to Karen and kids...Arlene adored and loved you so.

Karen, What a beautiful way to reminisce through Arlene's life with pictures.  I remember her being the sweetest ever and with her love of teaching  children,  it would be difficult to know how many lives have been effected  by her goodness. Karen. Magna elementary was her home, family she was mother to so many... we love you ,Mary, arlene, Ms. Short. and hope you find your love from LA, the hot guy you never forgot! Forever  your most gratful parent, who's kids are distrot, and cried, when they heard the teacher that tought them the most did not get to fullfill her retirement hopes and dreams of travel, and passion and fun filled adventures... We love you Arlene, we love you alot, and hope you will watch over us like it or not! 
For decades you tought us savages, then got stuck with the savage-wolfe's! We put you to the test, and you always came out looking better than the rest! We love you so much! Thank you, Arlene for loving us, and taking such good care of us and my kids! Arlene we love you so much.  You were our second mother and friend.  We loved to run around the corner and tell you about everything that was going on in our lives.  You always listened to us, laughed and cried with us, and were always there for us.  You have taught us so much.  Thank you for helping us raise our children.  Thank you for being at every birthday party, barbecue, Christmas, Dance Recital, Holiday and just always being there for us.  We are so grateful to call you our aunt. Ms. Short, You will be missed!  I was a student of Ms. Short's.  She was my fourth grade teacher and I adored her!  I'm sad to hear she's gone.

Ms. Short (as we called her) was a great teacher, and she will be missed by my whole family.  She taught all four of my kids in 4th grade at Magna Elementary.  She also became my really good friend.  I loved to substitute and teach in her classroom because the kids were always respectful.  We shared a love of music, as well.  We will never forget her.  :)  Our condolences to her family.

I was able to work with Arlene for 5 years at Magna Elementary.  She was always keeping me laughing with her witty comments and sense of humor.  She impacted the lives of many and will be greatly missed.  I am grateful to have known her.

Family ,  So sorry to hear about Arelene.  We had some fun times together when Larmer and I were in West Valley.  He died the day before she did , with his services being on Thursday and so I am doubly reminded of all things happening in the Lord's time.  Prayers area with you.

Arlene oh how I will miss you.  You made me feel like I was your sister.  you looked out for me and in turn I looked out for you.  I will miss you looking out your front door and asking me " where my shoes were as I walked to the mail box." Family... I have often thought about Arlene and she remains a friend of my youth...growing up together, college roomates, singing in Ricks program Bureau with her...what fun! How we did laugh!! Im sure she is singing in Heaven/s choir..Lana Mccardell Stimpson

Our deepest sympathy to the Harpers and Carlsons and our sincere appreciation for having known Arlene.  We will always be grateful for her memory, her flair for fashion, her sense of humor, her beautiful home, her friendship, her love of music, her deep love and concern for her family and her love for her little scotty dogs!  What a blessing she has been to many, including her neighbors, students, friends and family.

Living next to Arlene for 16 years was a blessing and a treat.  She was a great neighbor.  I loved her and am grateful for that time in my life.  How I cherish the many things we were able to do together: night chats on the driveway, watching West Fest fireworks together, the neighborhood yard sales, barbecues, picnic at the “duck park,” taking down trees, weaving white slats in the fence, and observing her love for her Duffies, and family members.  Arlene was someone to admire.  She took great care to look nice.  Her hair was always well kept--as were her nails.  She was a great dresser, too.  I benefitted personally from that many times when she would pass clothes on to me improving my wardrobe immensely.  Not only was the Arlene so well put together but her home and yard were, too.  She gave a lot to the students that she taught over the years.  It was fun to attend one of the programs that her school kids put on one year and to see her in action in that way.  I am thankful that Arlene was one of the ladies on my visiting teaching route.  I appreciate her musical ability and am grateful that she would be so willing to share that with so many through the years.  I like the example that Arlene set of always working to do better—to improve—to not be complacent.  I think she would want us to embrace that example and carry on likewise.  To her wonderful family we express our sympathies and thank you for your many kindnesses and concern for her over the years.  You were all certainly a blessing in her life and ours.

Arlene, we will miss hearing your beautiful angel voice singing in the choir.  You have been such a dear friend to our family.  We will miss you deeply.

Arlene, oh how you will be missed, not only by your family, but from your many friends and neighbors.  Karen, thank you for sharing the pictures of Arlene with us.  I am sure you and your brother have many fawn memories of her.  What a joyous reunion she must of had with her parents and family.
