Elizabeth “Betty” Jean Holman Butts passed away peacefully on January 27, 2014 in West Jordan, Utah. Betty was born on August 1, 1926 to Harold G. Holman and Glennie O. Hansler in Long Beach, California. She spent her youth in Southern California and always loved the hot, sunny weather. (She never quite got used to the Utah cold, and was often wearing a cardigan outside in the middle of 90 degree weather.) She graduated from Bell High School and went on to work as a Lab Technician, which she was immensely proud of her entire life. Betty married William R. Butts and later divorced. She had two daughters, Marilyn and Carolyn. She loved being a homemaker and stay at home mom.
In 1985, she moved to Utah to live with her daughter Carolyn and her husband Lonny, and their three children, Scott, Ryan and Brittney. She woke up early every morning and started cleaning and doing chores around the house, always making sure to time them around The Price is Right. She helped with dusting, laundry, sweeping, meals and helped with the kids. She also had a very special place in her heart for their dog, Lady, and they were great companions to each other for many years. Betty was always so supportive of everyone’s activities, and never missed a baptism, baby blessing, sporting event, recital, play, wedding, temple sealing, birthday, family dinner or crazy themed party. She was very quick witted, loved to tease and in-turn enjoyed being teased. She had a happy disposition and infectious laugh! While living with Carolyn’s family, she met her best friend Virginia Stevens. Together they had fun going to movies and lunch, the Harmon Home, on many trips with Donna Tours, and Bingo halls. They loved each other’s company and enjoyed traveling by bus around the United States. For every adventure she went on she collected a spoon, and throughout her life accumulated a large collection. Betty loved to do puzzles, play Skipbo and Rummikub, read, watch movies, crochet and do crafts. She attended the Southeast Christian Church every week for 20 plus years, armed with her famous white purse, keys in the door and hundreds of tissues.
After living with Carolyn’s family for 27 years, she moved into a care center, due to health complications. While she resided there, she was still able to have many visits from Carolyn and family. She was always happy with the food there, made some friends, and would still continue to tease us. Though dementia made it hard for her to remember everything, she was always happy to visit, hold hands and express her love for her family.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, brother Robert, dear friend Thora Pace, and grandson Cody. She is survived by her daughters Marilyn Jorgensen of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and Carolyn (Lonny) Pace of West Jordan, Utah. Also her five grandchildren, Erik Jorgensen, Scott (Melissa) Pace, Ryan (Jaclyn) Pace, Brittney (Brent) Sedgwick and Nels Jorgensen, who all together gave Betty 12 great grandchildren.
We love you Betty, Mom, Grandma and G Dawg. Until we meet again…
