at the age of 75 on October 18, 2021, after a brief, but aggressive, 5-month battle with cancer. Her
battle only emphasized her courageous and positive outlook on life, even when facing the most difficult
challenges. Despite extensive treatments and frequent hospitalizations, she stayed strong until every
treatment option was exhausted.
Deloris was born to Ivy and Effie Martin Bell on December 13, 1945, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
As the youngest of 8 children, she was affectionately known as “Babydoll” by all who adored her. She
remained in Louisiana until her early twenties, at which time she relocated her family to Utah.
Deloris began working at a young age and instilled this same work ethic in her children. She
began working retail at Skaggs Alpha Beta and ended her career with Fresh Market. During this time,
she created many lifelong friendships. Customers adored her and sought her out simply because they
loved how important she made them feel.
Deloris remained active throughout her life and never let an idle moment pass. She loved
bowling, softball, fishing, dancing, slot machines, bingo, and listening to her “oldies”. She was a diehard
fan of cowboy and black and white movies (although they drove her family crazy!). Some of her
favorites were “Gunsmoke”, “Lassie”, “Sanford and Son”, and “Bonanza”, just to name a few. She never
could understand why no one else found any interest in her choice of TV shows because to her they
were thoroughly entertaining. She had an unwavering support for the Utah Jazz and was quick to
express how she felt about the opposing team and players. When in the kitchen, she was truly in her
element. Very rarely did she depend upon a recipe, measuring device, or any opinions about how
something should be prepared. She was a fabulous cook who found great satisfaction in preparing
delicious meals for her family and friends. Her gumbo, collard greens, catfish, pecan candy, cheesecake,
and 7-Up cake were just a few of her specialties, which will be greatly missed.
Undeniably, her greatest love and joy in life were her children and grandchildren. After the loss
of her daughter, Yvette, she admirably accepted the responsibility of raising her 6-year-old
granddaughter, Lindsey. Deloris took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with her family and
couldn’t have been a prouder mom or grandma. Her love for each of them ran deep and was very
genuine. Whether it was a compliment, cooking them a meal, bantering back and forth, slyly slipping
them a little cash, or just simply hanging out, there was never a question how much she loved and
cherished them.
In her later years, she was blessed to cross paths with the love of her life, Larry. In their time
together, Larry treated her like a queen and was sure to always have an adventure planned. Some of
her greatest times with him were spent horseback riding, river rafting, road trips, train rides, camping,
and exploring the outdoors. She thoroughly enjoyed these adventures and the time she was able to
spend with him.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kiley McClain, and her cherished
grandchildren, Lindsey Bell, Karley McClain and Kennedi McClain.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and daughter, Yvette Bell.
Although your absence has left us heartbroken, your legacy and extraordinary example will live
on forever!!!
