West Palm Beach, Florida – Stuart J. Schwartz, 85, a former resident of New Hartford, New York, died at his home in West Palm Beach, Florida, on September 14, 2021. Stu was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania, on June 20, 1936, the son Samuel and Jeannette (Weiss) Schwartz. He graduated from Waverly (N.Y.) High School in 1954 at the top of his class and was a proud graduate of Cornell University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1958, and SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he received his M.D. in 1962 graduating with honors. While in medical school, Stu married Elaine Smith of Utica, New York, whom he met while at Cornell. Following medical school, Stu continued his medical training as a surgical resident at University Hospitals in Cleveland followed by a urology residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Thereafter, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force for two years. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Stu settled in New Hartford and practiced urology for 28 years until his retirement in 1997.
Stu took great pride in his medical practice and contributing to the community in which he lived and worked. He was a Diplomate of the American Urological Association and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He served in leadership positions on the medical staffs of St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he also served on the Board of Trustees for many years. Stu also served on the Board of BlueCross BlueShield of Utica-Watertown. Following his retirement, he served on the Board of Directors of Conmed Corporation, the medical products firm, for 16 years.
Stu was a longtime member of Temple Beth El synagogue in Utica and Temple Beth David in Palm Beach Gardens. He enjoyed his memberships at The Yahnundasis Golf Club in New Hartford and The Club at Ibis in West Palm Beach. His passions were golf, travel, bridge and gin, which he enjoyed throughout his life. His happiest moments were in the time spent with family, friends and colleagues.
Stu is survived by Elaine, his wife of 61 years; his daughter, Janice, of New Hartford; his son and daughter-in-law, Hal and Elisa of New York City; and two grandchildren, Mia and Alec of New York City. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth, of Clearwater, Florida.
