Richard (“Dick”) Seburn Tyler; 93, of Wellington, Florida, went home to be with his Lord on June 15, 2020. He is survived by three children, Kathy Tyler, Karen Tyler Gentry, and Rick Tyler, and by 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Dick was born on July 23, 1926 in Bessemer, Alabama, the son of Arthur Buford Tyler and Georgia Mae Tyler. When he was four years old, the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he lived until 1943 when he joined the United States Navy. He served for two years (in the Philippines and in Sasebo, Japan) and in 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Felecie Elizabeth Chapin. Together they attended the University of Tennessee where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He began his 38 year career with Florida Power and Light Company in Sarasota and then on to Miami, finally ending up in Wellington. Dick and Felecie were active members of both First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, FL and First United Methodist Church of Hialeah, FL. In 1986, after moving to Wellington, FL, they joined Wellington Church. In every church he attended, Dick was a member of the choir where he enjoyed sharing his gift of music. Growing up in Nashville, he spent many a Saturday night at the Ryman Auditorium listening to the Grand Ole Opry. Needless to say, music was an important part of family life as well. There was rarely a gathering that didn’t include getting out the guitars and having a singalong.
While living in Wellington, Dick and Felecie cared for their aging parents and set a selfless example of love and devotion. During his retirement years, one of his favorite places to be was out in his workshop where he always had a project in the works. He and Felecie also enjoyed many summers with their children and grandchildren at their cabin on Cullowhee Mountain in Western North Carolina. All in all, he had a wonderful life.
Dick was beloved by many and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
He was buried at the South Florida National Cemetery on June 26th. A memorial service will be planned for some time in the Fall.
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:21
