Carlton Gourdine was always the "quiet" guy behind the on-air rants of Don Imus on WNBC. Imus was always chatting with him on the air, while Carlton (aka "Flash") remained behind the scenes, rarely being heard. Imus would try to draw Carlton into the on-air conversation. "Hey Flash" Imus would ask, "How 'come this, or how 'come that" during the show. In 1975 WNBC did a remote broadcast from the Atlantic City Boardwalk, and I snapped some interesting photos of Imus and Flash in the makeshift studio.  Vintage stuff!

I heard so much about Carlton from Michelle that when I met him I felt as though I knew him forever.  His smile was contagious as was his sprit.  RIP Carlton, you will truly be missed.

From the moment I met Carlton, I was touched by his easy going personality, and his generosity of spirit. Just talking to him showed me things that I needed to work on within myself. This is how I knew Carlton was a special person, whom I will always be fond of, as I aspire to be half the man he was.

Granddad is a wonderful giving husband, father, and grandpa.  He will make you laugh, but, always teaching his Tai Chi to someone.  He loved to exercise and be around family.  He made me feel good and proud to be a Gourdine.  I will miss him dearly!

Granddad was a teacher.  He taught all of us wisdom.  For me it was how to do TAE-KWON-DO and for others it was teaching right from wrong.  When I think of granddad, I think of him as inspiration to keep pushing on on matter what happens.  Granddad was one of the best persons I knew.  When I get older, I can pass down his knowledge on the the next generation.

Carlton was a father to me.  I loved his open heart.  He always cared for others.  Every time I saw him he was doing GOD's work.  He was a teacher and made sure you got the message he was sending, always...  I am glad that he was a part of my life and I will miss him dearly.  His loud laugh will never be forgotten.  Dad, you were like no other and I am glad that I got to know you.

So this was my Dad who went by many names CJ, DJ Flash,Jerome,Poppy, Carlton Gourdine, & Granddad. He was recently called home.  At first I was devastated you see, he was my first mentor, spiritual leader, educator to life, and he educated on the entertainment industry etc.., how to deal and become a man, first person to introduce God to me. My Pops was a great man who worked for NBC in NYC for over thirty something years as an engineer, camera man, and wore many more hats.  He often trained new people and gave me my first taste of being around film and the camera etc... He also introduced music to me being Imus in the morning first Dj went by the name DJ Flash.  He was also the first person I ever saw on the wheels of steel. Yes, it's hard to lose such a teacher, but, I was blessed to have him in my life always by my side and giving me great advice.  Sometimes I didn't listen, but, just knowing I had his ear and support was just enough... I will always be thankful for all the teachings and the TOUGH love.  The truth that he told me was to never lie, never sugar coated anything to anyone, always give tell the truth and kept it 100 with people including me. He retired years ago and always said he would become a personal trainer and would get certified.  He did it and it was amazing to watch.  He literally became just that and learned tai chi and taught in the gymyoufit in West Palm beach.  He also taught nutrition to all who want to learn, get fit, and get skilled etc.....  He not only inspired me, he inspired generations of both sides of my family taking cousins, uncles ,aunts under his wing always was blessing others.  My dad was a great man to me.  I will always love you POPS!

I have had the pleasure of having Carla (Nikki) as a wonderful friend for almost a decade. She has been nothing more than inspiring, thoughtful, and most important there when you need her.
I can only believe she obtained these attributes and more through the teachings and love of her mother and father.
It was an honor to celebrate Mr. Gourdine's life and legacy. May many more blessings be bestowed upon you as your journey continues on earth and in heaven.

Alice Look WNBC - Flash! Yes i worked with him at WNBC Radio; it was my first job and Flash was on the Imus Show. He was always Flash, hardly ever called by his real name and he could keep up with the banter on that show, which was not easy. Imus could be merciless. This is such a great photo of the sweet guy.

Dear Michelle,
I had the distinct pleasure of working with one the most professional, warm, kind hearted and sometimes spirited people I've known in my life. That was Carlton.
He was rather soft spoken, polite and always had a kind word for anyone he would come in contact with. I was saddened by the news of his passing, but I know he's now in God's loving arms and is at peace.

I worked with "Flash" for a number of years at WNBC, and when I knew that I would be working with him for the day I was assured of several things---that it would be a pleasant day because of him; that he was always smiling; he had a wonderful sense of humor and he made me laugh. My sincere condolences for the loss of dear Carlton. The thing is at WNBC in NYC, we all knew him as Flash. I don't know how he acquired the nickname as it was firmly in place long before I arrived. He was always a pleasure to work with, always arrived with a smile and a ready attitude to go after another story and was just an all around wonderful human being. We all have wonderful memories and may yours along with the grace of God see you through the pain of his loss.
