Mulcahy, Richard Paul (February 4, 1932 - January 15, 2021). Named for a leader of the Irish Republican Army – a detail he shared only recently – Richard “Dick” Mulcahy was a proud Irishman, a Fox News devotee, and an avid Boston sports fan. An engineer for the various iterations of the New England Telephone Company for almost 40 years, a loving husband and father, and an incredibly loving and proud grampa, Dick lived life simply and on his own terms, true to his beliefs, generous to a fault, patient beyond measure, and kind. He died after a brief battle with COVID on January 15, 2021.
If the quality of a life is measured by what we leave behind, Dick leaves a legacy of happy memories – diving off his shoulders into the Cape Cod waters, yelling at televised sporting events, and cooking, eating, and drinking endless cups of coffee with family. He was a quiet man – except when watching sports or driving through Boston – but he was a warm and constant presence, someone who showed up to lend a hand, provide a ride, lend money (and forget he had) or offer a kind word or a quick, humorous aside. A former Army sergeant, he was firm but fair. He believed in doing things well – and anyone who ever saw his perfectly manicured lawns and perfectly mulched and trimmed flower beds knows I speak the truth. His words “There are no small jobs!” – usually bellowed at his children when they cut corners on chores – endure.
While his children are grateful for the nearly 90 years he had, they are most grateful for his boundless patience and his huge heart, for the hours he gave so freely. He served his country proudly in Korea. He married his high school sweetheart (Rosemarie Iarrobino Mulcahy) and lived together happily with her for 49 years until her death, raising two children (Pam – Holderness, NH - and Richard – Sandwich, MA) and an assortment of dogs. He is survived by his two children and three grandsons (Max, 21, Richard, 20, and Joshua, 15).
His family is incredibly grateful to all the staff at Beth Israel Deaconess in Plymouth for their skilled and loving care. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth at www.bidplymouth.org/donate.
