Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Fred grew up loving the Brooklyn Dodgers and had fond memories of visiting Ebbets Field as a kid. He went on to become a proud and devoted husband, father and grandfather and lived a very full, interesting life. He left an impression on everyone he met and will be remembered most for his sense of humor and wit as well as for his kindness, wisdom and down-to-Earth nature.
Fred had a passionate interest in many things including American history, the whaling industry, food, pirates, antiques, cartoons, music, movies, crossword puzzles, gardening, and more food. For over ten years he participated in Revolutionary War re-enactments as a member of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers of America, the highlight of which was meeting Queen Elizabeth who commented “My, you are tall.”. Fred loved spending time with friends and family, and could be counted on to make us laugh with silly facial expressions or quotes from some of his favorite shows like “The Honeymooners” or “Fawlty Towers”.
Fred served proudly in the US Army and was honorably discharged as PFC. He was a graduate of Hofstra University and also served as a volunteer firefighter in Stony Brook, NY. His lengthy sales career began by “peddling drugs out of the trunk of his car” in Brooklyn for Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical. He then spent decades in advertising sales with Romaine-Pearson Publishers and SRDS. After getting tired of the daily commute into Manhattan, he moved his family up to Cape Cod where they owned and operated the Lions Head Inn in West Harwich for a number of years. Prior to retiring in 2020, Fred spent over 25 years with Today Real Estate where he still holds the record for having the most listings under $40,000. Out of everything he did throughout his life, his most favorite was becoming a grandpa to Simon almost two years ago.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 44 years, Deborah, his son Rick, “favorite daughter-in-law” Sara and grandson Simon, and his beloved in-laws Lilliana, Ray, Jeff, Charlene, Don and Lena. He is predeceased by his parents James & Frances Denton, sister Joan & her husband Thomas.
A Celebration of Life/Roast will be held on Saturday May 14, 2022 from 12-5 PM. For location information please email the Denton family at freddentonmemorial@gmail.com
