Shirley Ann Henderson Van Dyke

Shirley was born in Des Moines on May 10, 1928 to Ted C. and Edith Henderson. She graduated from North High School and completed an associate’s degree at Stephens College in Fashion Design. Shirley worked briefly as a Buyer for Younkers.

Shirley was an active member of PEO Chapter GA and the Peoria Desert Dancers, where she was a devoted tap dancer. She was a past member of the National TTT Society and PTA President at Jefferson Elementary.

For 36 years Shirley proudly volunteered as a Methodist Blank Hospital Guild member with over 4000 hours of service including the Festival of Trees and Lights. Shirley was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She and her husband have been long-time members of the Wakonda Club.

Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who cherished her family and many friends.

Shirley is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Lester, of Des Moines and Peoria; her children: John Mahnke of New York City, Lise Mahnke (Mary) of Denver, Colorado, Eric Mahnke (Paula) of Carlisle, Iowa, and Amy Mahnke of St. Paul, Minnesota; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and her brother, Stacy R. Henderson of Des Moines.

Memorial services will be held 10:00 am Saturday, December 4 at McLaren’s Funeral Chapel, 801 19th Street, West Des Moines.
