Miguel A. “Mike” Murillo II, 76, passed away at his home on April 28, 2018. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2018 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Pkwy in West Des Moines with burial at Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Mike was born on September 30, 1941 in West Des Moines, Iowa. He proudly served in the Army and was a Veteran. Mike attended DMACC and Drake University. He worked for the City of Des Moines as a city inspector and housing rehab specialist, and was also an entrepreneur. Mike worked in many different fields as a realtor, restaurateur, insurance agent and welder. He was one of the men to build the St. Louis Archway, working as a welder at Pittsburg Des Moines Steel. In his younger years, he was a boxing coach, boxed in the Army, and was a Golden Gloves Champion. Mike was a member of LULAC-League of United Latin American Citizens and was very active in politics. In his spare time, he was an artist who loved to build and create things (he always had a project) and enjoyed gardening.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Everett “Lolly”, and sister, Mary “Sandy” Shineflew. He is survived by his children, Bill Shaeffer, Mike Murillo, Jeannie Hall and Sonja Murillo; grandchildren, Stormy Gleeson, Zach Hall, and Alanna Hall; and great-grandchildren, Aden Dittmar, Natalie Simko and Oliver Gleeson; and brother Raymond Murillo.
Mike was a generous man and always looked out for other people, lending a helping hand to anyone in need. He was loved by his family and friends and will be forever missed.
