Maria Otilia Chalfant, 92, passed away December 9, 2024 and she was the heart of our home and family. A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 19, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
Maria was born in Michoacan, Mexico on July 21, 1932. She later came to the U.S. and made her home in West Des Moines, Iowa where she lived for over 50 years. She was the most loving, giving, caring wife, mother, grandmother and Tia (aunt) as many knew her. Maria had the strongest love for God and her family and would do anything to help others. Her food made you feel like home, her hugs took away your worries and her smile would let you know that everything was going to be ok. She had a warmth about her that can only be described as a gift from God.
Maria is survived by her husband Robert W. Chalfant; son, Gerard (Guadalupe) Berber; daughter, Sharmein M. (Daniel) Carder; grandsons who she was so proud of and adored, Gerardo Berber Jr., Grant Carder and George Carder; and step-grandsons, Gabe, Luis, and Felipe Saldana. Those that will greet her in heaven are her sons, Jose Luis and Manuel.
