James E. Bruner, 95, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 23, 2017 at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation will be held 10 a.m. prior the service at McLaren’s Chapel.
James was born February 12, 1922 to James and Elizabeth (Ballensiefer) Bruner in Wiota, Iowa. He graduated from Wiota High School in 1940 and joined the Navy in 1942. James served in WWII on the USS Ormsby ship. He met the love of his life, Kathy, and they were united in marriage in 1950. He was a production supervisor for Mid-Continent Bottlers for most of his career. James enjoyed traveling and being outdoors, more specifically enjoyed the winters in Texas. He loved to cheer on his favorite team the Chicago Cubs. Most of all, James cherished spending time with his family, especially the time spent with his grandkids.
James is survived by wife of 66 years, Kathleen; daughter, Julie (Steven) Smiley; grandsons, Ryan (Lynsi) Smiley, Devin Bruner and Dane Bruner; twin granddaughters, Kary (Zach) Korte and Katy Bruner; daughter–in-law, Liz Bruner; brother-in-law, Phil (Gail) Rash; sister-in-law, Jo Rash; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son David; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Stan Rash.
