Born in St. Louis, MO on June 7, 1928, she grew up in a loving family and enjoyed many happy gatherings with numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. She attended Southwest High School and was a member of the Tower Grove Baptist Church in St. Louis where she met and married Albert Lee Anderson in 1947. Together the couple had four children.
In 1963 the family moved to West Des Moines, IA where she continued to be a devoted mother who enjoyed making the family home a place of comfort. She possessed a love of learning and was an avid reader of history and follower of current events. During this time in Iowa, she earned an Associate of Arts degree, and an Associate of Science degree in Paralegal Studies at the Des Moines Area Community College. Following completion of her studies, she practiced as a legal assistant for the law firm Grefe & Sydney, L.P.C. in Des Moines. In these years, she was also inducted as a member of MENSA.
In 1992, she moved from Iowa to be near her family members in Papillion, NE. There she lived independently for more than 25 years, making and keeping her home, also traveling and visiting with her immediate and extended family. In her last years, she was blessed with the close help and support of her son and daughter in Omaha and also with the compassionate care and support of new friends and caregivers.
Berta is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Orrel Daugherty and Lucy Mae (Brinkley) Daugherty; sisters, Ola Mae Kincaid and Venita Belle Furgerson; and brother, Jack Allen Daugherty. She is survived by her children Susan Anderson, Janice Thompson (Ken), James Anderson (Robin), and Andrew Anderson (Heather); grandchildren and great grandchildren Matthew Geiler (Jennifer), Edison, Eliot; Michael Geiler (Nicole), Wilson and Chester; Jennifer Thompson (Windy), Jonathon Thompson (Susanna), Aida and Carolina; Lucas Anderson (Lela) Sam and Kate; Chelsea and Casey Kettler; Kelley Nelson (Andy); Carla Wright (Jeff), Zane and Zayden Grabe. She is also survived by sister Ann Marie Duba and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for the family will be held at the Jordan Cemetery in West Des Moines, IA on Jan. 23, 2021, 11 a.m. and livestreamed at www.mclarensresthavenchapel.com. Memorials may be sent to Hillcrest Hospice Care, 1820 Hillcrest Dr. suite b, Bellevue, NE 68005.
