August Flores

August “Gus” Phillip Flores Jr., aged 92, entered his life in Heaven on March 28, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa. August was born on March 25, 1933, to parents August Phillip Flores Sr. and Maria Petra Martinez-Navarro in Bancroft, Iowa.

Gus is survived by his sons, Scott Alan Flores of Waukee, Phillip Charles Flores of Ankeny and grandson Noah August Flores of Ankeny.

Gus was preceded in death by loving wife Lilnora “Lil” of 46 years in 2005, his parents, August Phillip Flores Sr. and Maria Petra Martinez-Navarro as well as sisters Agnes, Mary, Jean Jovita and brother Frank.

Gus joined the United States Air Force and was based out of San Antonio, Texas before his transfer to Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Germany. Gus worked as an aircraft mechanic and also played for the AIr Force baseball league for three years while overseas. He also spent time in Germany, Tripoli Libya, Rome and other areas.

Gus loved his family, friends and had incredible faith in God. He always had a smile on his face, a joke to tell and was always there with an open ear. He worked in the agriculture, grain business for many years in southern and northern Iowa and then for the Pilot Corporation in Urbandale where he retired.

In 1995 Gus and Lil moved to Waukee where they enjoyed time with family, friends and dancing many nights with friends at LULAC-League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa-Des Moines. Gus was the biggest Iowa Hawkeye fan and would not miss a football, wrestling or basketball game. You could always see him sporting something Hawkeye. Gus also loved golf. He and three of his friends spent 18 years every Wednesday 7:30 AM tee time at Waveland or other courses in the area.

The Central Iowa VA Health Care System provided Gus with the best, loving care over the years. The family wishes to thank all of the physicians, nurses, physical therapists and home care staff that took care of Gus and always greeted him with a smile.

Palliative / Hospice Care - In Memory of August P. Flores

A Celebration of Life will be held for August P. "Gus" Flores Saturday June 21st from 4-7 pm at Centennial Crossing club house - 1325 SE Centennial Parkway - Waukee. (across street from Waukee police/fire station) Parking will be at Centennial Park across the street. (no street parking allowed in the townhome community unfortunately)

A short service will begin at 4:30PM with hors d'oeuvres, food, refreshments and drinks following.

Dad wanted a short service and for everyone to enjoy themselves after. We hope you can join in the Celebration of Life.
