Alan Kent Young, 58, passed away from pancreatic cancer on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street. The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday at West Des Moines Christian Church, 4501 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines, where Alan was a member. A Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.
Alan was born July 3, 1954 to Howard (Junior) and Lois (McLey) Young in Des Moines. He grew up in West Des Moines and graduated from Valley High School in 1972, where he was a competitive wrestler. He attended Mankato State University and Northern Iowa Community College.
Alan had a passion for Clear Lake and the Florida Keys. He enjoyed fishing, boating, the outdoors, walking river banks, sports and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. People of all walks of life were welcomed into Alan’s life. Most of all he enjoyed his family and friends.
Alan worked in the family restaurant Gigi’s, managed The Tail of the Cock, and had worked for R.R. Donnelly and Foot Locker.
He is survived by his daughter, Leora Young; mother, Lois Young (Melvin Burch); and two sisters, Paula and Pam Young. Alan was preceded in death by his father; grandparents, Howard and Pauline Young and Arthur and Leora McLey; and his brother-in-law, Gary DeGeus.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to his family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Shreck, Tami, Katie, and the staff at Kavanagh House for their wonderful care.
