It is with great sadness that the Pequeño family announces the passing of Maria Leticia Amalia Pequeño, 66, of Weslaco, Texas. She was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas on December 28, 1956 to Maria Candelaria Flores and Raul Salazar and was raised by her Mami Maria and her Papi Juan, whom she loved dearly. In 1971 she met the love of her life, Raul Pequeño, and they married on May 21, 1978, and started a new family. They had two daughters, Karla Ileana and Jehovannie Itzell. On March 10, 2023, a new addition to the family was welcomed: Victoria Renee Jimenez, and even though Maria loved her role as a mother, it was that of “grandmother” that sparked an entirely new kind of love in her life. As an employee of Weslaco ISD for more than 30 years, she found her calling as a Special Education teaching assistant. During her time at Margo Elementary and Cleckler-Heald Elementary she was able to touch the lives of many students, whom she often kept in touch with after they moved on to other schools. Even though she wanted to dedicate more years to her career she retired due to her increasing health issues. Maria enjoyed cooking and was known for her sewing skills, but as a Christian woman it was her relationship with God that she loved spending the most time on and for years she was a member of Mision Luterana San Pablo in Weslaco, Texas before moving to Harlingen, Texas. In addition to her Christian faith, she will always be remembered for her strong will and her devotion to her family. Maria joined the Lord on December 8, 2023 in Harlingen, Texas, and is preceded in death by her parents, Maria Candelaria Flores and Raul Salazar. She is survived by her husband, Raul Pequeño; her daughters, Karla Ileana Page and Jehovannie Itzell Pequeño; and her granddaughter, Victoria Renee Jimenez; as well as many godchildren. Pallbearers are: Raul Pequeno; Ismael Flores, Jr.; Antonio Leal, Jr.; Frank Rosales; Martin Torres, Jr.; Mark Torres; Noel Gonzales; Noah Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers: Nathaniel Gonzales and Rolando Acevedo Salazar. Family will receive friends December 13, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel Highland in Weslaco, Texas. The funeral service will be December 14, 2023 at 10:00 AM officiated by Pastor with the interment following at 11:00 AM at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
In lieu of flowers family will be collecting toy donations for children from her mission.
