Sueko Nakahira was born on June 10, 1925, in Uwajima, Japan. She spent her childhood and early adult life in Japan, as well as living in Manchuria. Having experienced the hardship and trauma of World War 11, she has lived with the memory of the bombing of Nagasaki.
In 1954, Mrs. Hall married William Augustus Hall who was in the United States Navy and was stationed in Yokohama, Japan. In 1964, they moved to Mr. Hall’s family home on Hamblen Farm in Wellfleet. She immersed herself in the culture of America by taking English language lessons and by studying a book on “How to Be an American Housewife”.
Mrs. Hall developed many talents such as gardening, cooking, rug hooking, crewelwork and knitting. She was an avid golfer, belonging to the Dennis Pines Country Club, and she won many Cape Cod League Women’s Championships, golfing well into her 80s.
She was an animal lover, owning many cats and dogs, as well as feeding wild deer, foxes and coyotes in her yard. Her last dog, Mackie, was very loyal to her and was by her side when she died.
Mrs. Hall was an extremely hospitable and generous woman, often entertaining guests in her home and helping friends and family. Summer visitors to Wellfleet enjoyed renting the carriage house and the older section of the main house on her property. She was especially interested in children and she always had gifts for them. She was remarkable in learning the genealogy of Mr. Hall’s family in Wellfleet.
In her later years as her health failed, Mrs. Hall was able to remain in her own home with the loyal assistance of many devoted caregivers. Here she enjoyed receiving many visitors and talking about shared interests and past events.
Sueko was predeceased by her husband William Hall and her stepson Stewart Hall; also her brother Sadayoshi and sister Ryoko Uyeshiro. She is the mother of Hiroko Hall Yamamoto and her husband Shigehiko of Saitama, Japan, and Margaret Hall Conlan and her husband Michael of Ridgefield, CT. She is the grandmother of Hiroshi, Yumi, Noriko, William, Erin her husband Corey and Delaney. Also the great grandmother of six.
Visiting hours will be held the Nickerson Funeral Home, 340 Main St., Wellfleet, on Monday, September 19, 2022 from 9:30-11:00 am. There will be a graveside service at 11:30 at Oakdale Cemetery in Wellfleet. Family and friends are invited to attend.
