Sheila J. Kelley, longtime owner of Kelley’s Flowers on West Main Street in Wellfleet, died October 10th 2024 in a collision with a box truck on Route 6 in South Wellfleet. Her death came nearly 21 years after her husband, David Perry, was killed in an early morning collision on Route 3 in Plymouth. She was 63.
A lifelong resident of the Outer Cape, Sheila was the daughter of Jack and Ann Kelley of Truro. She grew up on South Pamet Road in the same house where her father was born. Her father was Postmaster of Truro for many years.
She attended Cape Cod Technical High School in their distributive education program. She did her internship at Thayer’s Flower Shop in Harwich and fell in love with the flower business. After graduation, she worked at Cape Cod 5 in Wellfleet and in the evenings commuted to Boston to complete a course at Rittner’s School of Floral Design.
In 1982 she bought 45 West Main Street in Wellfleet and opened Kelley’s Flowers. She ran the business for the next 42 years. She was very particular about the flowers. They had to be super fresh and she was known for her generous bouquets. Flowers were her passion.
She also loved to cook and would often drop off food to people in good times and bad. The day before she died, she dropped off chicken soup and banana bread to a friend with COVID. Her loved ones want her to be remembered not just as a talented florist but as a good and loyal friend and someone always willing to help others. She was generous and kind.
Sheila was also well known for her love of dogs and always owned golden retrievers. She is survived by her 2-year-old golden retriever, Tucker, who will miss her greatly. Other survivors include her partner, Bill Brazile of Eastham, his mother, Margie Brazile of Eastham, her sister, Peggy Dahill of Eastham and her beloved nephew, T.K. Dahill of Eastham. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Ann Kelley (who died on October 22, 2024 - 12 days after Sheila) and sister-in-law of the late Tom Dahill.
A funeral mass for Sheila and her mother, Ann, will take place on November 2nd 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Route 6 in Wellfleet.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sheila’s honor can be made to Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue at 10 Chapin Road in Hudson MA, 01749.
