Jim put a premium on education and received a BA in Physics from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine and then taught high school for several years. He also did research at the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratories. He received a Masters at Simmons College in Library Science. He was head of the Engineering Libraries at MIT and went on to work at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and at Harvard University. Before retiring he was head of the EPA’s Superfund Records Center for the New England region. He also put a premium on good friends, socializing and gourmet enterprises. He was the hub for artists, scientists, gardeners, photographers, literalists, and connoisseurs of fine food and drink. He loved gathering with friends, new and old at his favorite haunts in Provincetown. Music was a major enjoyment and passion. As a teen he played organ for the church choir and later in life was a member of the Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Festival Chorus. In 1976 he bought a cottage in North Truro which he enlarged and refurbished. He served on several town committees and was a member of the Board of Library Trustees during which time a new library was approved and built.
He is survived by his nephew, Douglas (Jennifer) Kyed and his grand nieces Olivia and Hallie Kyed of Franklin, MA and his niece Amanda (Jeff) Kyed-Callahan of San Francisco,CA, and his sister-in-law Donna Kyed of Franklin, MA. His brother Lance D Kyed passed away 2020. His ashes with be interred at Oak Cliff Cemetery in Derby, Connecticut along side many of his family.
