Ruby Louise Speckels Cubley of Houston, Texas died peacefully on August 19, 2020 after a long illness. She was born on September 30, 1940 in Schulenburg, Texas to Bernard and Ruby Speckels. Ruby loved being in Girl Scouts, playing the drum in the marching band and was an avid journalist for the Schulenburg High School paper.
Ruby graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1958. She went on to Austin to study journalism at the University of Texas at Austin. Ruby paused her studies to marry her husband Dean in 1964.
Ruby moved in 1965 to a small community near the Johnson Space Center called Clear Lake City where she raised her children and became very involved in the community. Ruby was a member of a grass roots campaign in 1977 that worked both at the state and federal level to try and block the annexation of Clear Lake by the neighboring city of Houston. Ruby continued her political pursuits as a registered lobbyist in Texas and Washington D.C. for many years promoting a variety of causes and legislation.
Ruby was a Realtor and a member of various community organizations including the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce, Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, League City Historical Society, Bay Area Republican Women and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a past President of the Bay Area Republican Women’s group and led their legislative efforts throughout her years in the organization.
Ruby’s hobbies included cooking, supporting her favorite political causes and spending time with her grandchildren. Her chicken recipes led to cooking championships in 1979 and 1982 and Ruby attended many state and national political conventions over the years supporting various political candidates. Grandma Ruby was always in the audience for dance recitals and plays and in the bleachers for every volleyball, softball and baseball game.
Ruby is survived by her husband of 56 years Dean Cubley, her son Scott Cubley and wife Elizabeth Cubley, her son Brian Cubley and wife Katie Miller, her grandchildren Ashley Cubley, Sean Cubley, Austin Miller and Kelly Miller and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents Ruby and Bernard Speckels and her siblings Ben Speckels, Frances Kucera and William Speckels.
She will be missed.
