Marjorie Nell (Thompson) Dorrington, 93, of Webster, Texas, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2022. She was born on March 29, 1929, in Clareville, Texas. Baby Nell was the oldest of three girls born to the late Horace and Erma Thompson.
As a young girl, Marjorie lived on a farm in Bee County, Texas. It was there that she started developing her life-long love of nature. She enjoyed watching birds and butterflies, climbing trees, and picking wildflowers in the fields. She later had a butterfly and hummingbird garden at her Webster home. Marjorie excelled in school and was a lifelong learner. Her family moved from the farm after sixth grade. They eventually settled in Laredo, where she graduated from Martin High School. It was there that she met and later married the late Jesse Dorrington on December 22, 1948. Marjorie continued her education at Southwest Texas State University, where she earned both a BS and MA in Education.
In 1951, Marjorie started teaching Home Economics at Falls City High School. Later, she taught at San Marcos High School and the Lab School at Southwest Texas State. Most of her career was spent in Clear Creek ISD, where she began teaching kindergarten at McWhirter Elementary School in 1961. She also taught at Webster Primary and Landolt Elementary Schools. Marjorie was a master teacher, who was loved by her students and respected by her peers. She ended her career as the coordinator of the CCISD Gifted and Talented Alpha program. She enjoyed leading the GT teachers whom she called her “Alpha Angels”.
Marjorie loved travelling and learning about other countries and their culture. She made several trips to Europe, including the British Isles and Scandinavia. She took other trips around the world including Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Guatemala, and Iceland. She was sad when her failing eyesight kept her from future travels.
Above all else, Marjorie deeply loved her family and friends. She had a keen sense of humor and was generous, supportive, and loyal to those she knew. Marjorie cared for and encouraged others by writing hand-written notes and letters. She lived out her Christian faith and was a charter member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Marjorie is survived by her three children: D.J. Dorrington of Golden, Colorado, Lary Dorrington and his wife, Beverly, of Clear Lake, and Wanda McMahon and her husband, Bob, of Brenham. Marjorie, who was known as Nana, had a special relationship with her only grandchild, David McMahon, of Pasadena. David and his wife, Cate, have a two-year-old daughter, Charlee. Marjorie is also survived by her two sisters, Happy Brymer of Austin, and Peggy Ward of Goldthwaite, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, December 13th, at 9 am in the Chapel at Forest Park East, followed by a memorial service at 10 am. Interment will be on December 14th, at 11:00am, at Hochheim Cemetery, a small country cemetery near Cuero, Texas. Marjorie’s parents, grandparents, and many generations of her mother’s family are buried there. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a contribution be made to a charity of your choice.
