(penned by Mae)
Born October 10, 1933 on Wednesday evening to Walter Lawrence and Carrie Hopes, this little girl was named Majoice, which I changed to Mae Joyce when in high school.
I was educated at Copeland Spring and Goodwill Junior High then finished high school at Pickard High School, Brenham, TX. I also spent a brief time at S.M. Coles High School in Corpus Christi, TX. I went to nursing school (LVN) at El Paso General Hospital and UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso). I finished nursing school in October, 1958.
I was married June 15, 1952 to Charlie Ferguson, Jr. With this union three boys were born, Charlie III, Anthony and Wendell.
My husband went to Formosa (now Taiwan) in 1953, at which time I went to Galveston, TX and my first job at UTMB (University of Texas Medical Branch), Zeigler building, 2nd floor. My next jobs were in Wahiawa, HI; Huntsville, AL; Frankfurt, Germany; Ft Carson, CO; Memorial Hospital of Galveston County (now named Mainland Center Hospital). I spent 32 years working Labor and Delivery, assisting mothers in delivering their babies, a job which I enjoyed to the highest.
I confessed a belief in Christ at an early age at Harris Springs AME Church, Brenham, TX. I was also a member of Carter Temple CME Church, Galveston, TX. While traveling in the Army, I attended the Protestant church and was a member of the Apostolic faith church in Huntsville, AL. After my husband retired from the service, I joined Greater Bell Zion Baptist Church under Reverend Zephaniah Phillips, now under Reverend Jerry B. Lee, Jr.
I was very active in my church, being a Sunday School teacher (women), member of the General Mission Society, Chairman of the Memorial Fund, Co-coordinator of the kitchen, Bible Study scholar, Prayer Meeting participant, member of Friends N Touch Social Club, and Vice President of Lydia Circle (mission). I was also an avid bowler, making it to the state tournament for 26 straight years. I enjoyed water aerobics, softball while living in Germany, and loved fishing and doing word find puzzles.
