Lavonne "Vonni" Rosella Willis, age 79, of Willmar, passed away Monday morning, February 20, at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar after a prolonged illness. All funeral services will be held in Houston, Texas with the Forest Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.
Vonni was born on February 28, 1932, in Holland Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the daughter of George and Ella (Nelson) Huisinga. She grew up on the family farm south of Prinsburg and attended District #103 School through the 6th grade. In 1943, the family moved to Sunnyside farm in Whitefield Township. She graduated from Willmar High School 1949. Vonni did office work at several local businesses, including Central Sheet Metal, before moving to Houston, Texas in 1960. In 1962, Vonnie was married to Roy Willis of Houston, Texas. They both were employed at Charter Oil Company for many years. Roy died in 1985 and Vonni moved back to Willmar. She was active in the Willmar Assembly of God Church and also worked as a bookkeeper of the church until she suffered a major stroke in 1994. Her sister, Ruth, has been her main care giver since then, even after being confined to Bethesda Heritage Center these past few years.
She is survived by her four children, Sandra Collins, Eugene, Larry and Gary Willis, all of Houston, TX; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Ruth Crowe and one brother, Ted (and Audrey) Huisinga, both of Willmar, besides other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ella; her husband, Roy; one sister, Dorothy Gilling and one brother, Dave Huisinga.
