Dr. Herrera will be remembered for his dedication and determination, having immigrated to Galveston, Texas in January, 1952 as a recent medical graduate to begin a residency in radiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He went on to complete his training at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, later serving as Assistant Professor of Radiotherapy at M.D.A. and Baylor College of Medicine before entering a 30 year career in private medical care.
Born in San Salvador, El Salvador on February 29, 1924, it was his dream to raise and educate his family in the United States. He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 60 years, Paula, and by their children Martha Lane Szescila and husband Andy, Jeanneatte Geary and husband Bob, Jose Herrera and wife Joan Marsanico and Susan Hightower and husband Bill. Dr. Herrera also will be missed by his 5 grandchildren, Bobby, Bradley, Ginny, K.C. and Jake and great-granddaughter, Alondra.
Dr. Herrera was an esteemed member of the local medical community, serving as President of the Medical Staff of Pasadena Bayshore Medical Center and a member of its Board of Trustees. He also held membership in the American College of Radiology, Texas Radiological Society, Radiological Society of North America and the American Medical Association. He was a Fellow of the American College of Angiology, Diplomat of the Pan American Medical Association and founding member of the Salvadoran American Medical Society.
Those who loved him will always warmly remember his love for festive get-togethers, family vacations and Sunday afternoon barbecues. His passion for travel rewarded him with cherished opportunities to meet and engage persons across the globe in all walks of life. He will be dearly missed.
The family will receive friends for visitation at the home of Susan and Bill Hightower on Thursday, June 9 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be preceded by a viewing and followed by a family graveside service on Friday, June 10 at Forest Park East Funeral Home and Cemetery in Webster, Texas. Memorial service is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. The family would like to extend special thanks to Doris Ramirez and Ana Alvarez for the loving care provided to our father.
