Jesús Montemayor Garza of Houston, TX, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in the early morning of October 22, 2023, just two months short of his 89th birthday. He was born December 24, 1934, in Nuevo Repueblo, Nuevo León, Mexico, and was 3rd eldest of 13 siblings.
He came from humble beginnings and had little education but was extremely intelligent and self-taught. He arrived in the US as a migrant worker at age 20, searching for a better life to help support his family in Mexico. He did various jobs but ultimately supported his family as a welder/fitter. He learned English by reading the local newspaper (Houston Chronicle).
His love story began with meeting his bride-to-be when our mom's aunt asked her to deliver tamales to a neighbor where he was strumming a guitar on the front porch. This was when their eyes met for the first time and later transformed into a long and beautiful 64-year marriage. Their relationship started with supervised dates to the weekly wrestling match at the Houston Coliseum with my mom's aunt and uncle. They bonded over wrestling and watched it almost religiously every Friday until the last weekend they spent at their daughter Janie's house a week before.
He is survived by his beautiful wife, Elia Garza, daughters Guadalupe Fernandez, Maria Verduzco, San Juanita Martinez, and sons Jesus M Garza Jr. and Jaime Garza. Son-in-laws Gerardo Fernandez, Jose Luis Verduzco and Julian Martinez. Daughter-in-laws Claudia Garza and Maria Enriqueta Garza.
Grandchildren: Rene & Michele Fernandez, Bianca Fernandez, Elisa & David Reyes. Steve Verduzco, Mark & Savannah Verduzco, Marissa & Diego Lopez, Amanda & Alex Sanchez, Duran Martinez, Jessica & Eugene Olivarez, Chelsea Garza, Alexis Garza & Sarah Garza
Great-grandchildren: Mercedes, Desiree, Levi, Dylan, Juliana, Lorenzo, Camila, Cassandra, Yaretzi, Mia, Michaela, Nico, Alaina, Giovanni, Adonis, Deliya, Julian, Kai, Alex, Aiden, Diego, Ace, Silas, Esme and Felix.
Great Great Granddaughter Mialani A. Guzman who is the granddaughter of his first and eldest grandson Miguel Angel Fernandez who was waiting to embrace his Tito upon entering the gates of heaven.
Jesus has left a hole in the hearts of all the lives he's touched and the family he leaves behind. We rejoice and take solace in knowing he is no longer suffering and lives in a better place, surrounded by loved ones and Christ, his Savior.
