Doris was born on December 6, 1928, in Friendswood, Texas, to Jesse Batson Bass and Lillian Hattie Bass. She spent most of her childhood in League City, graduating from Webster High School in 1944 at age 16.
When Doris was 15 years old, she went on her first date with 18-year-old Reginald Butler. They were married on August 22, 1947, in League City. Doris and Reggie had four beautiful children - Brad, Diane, and Brent and Brenda who were the first set of twins born in Galveston County. Doris spent most of her years as a devoted stay-at-home mom. She spent a few years working as a contractor for NASA and a realtor, while Reggie worked at Union Carbide. Doris and Reggie retired to the lake house they built in Point Blank, Texas, in 1990.
Doris was a humble, intuitive, and empathetic woman of exceptional faith who loved her family and friends deeply and unconditionally. When Doris entered a room, it brightened because of her joy. When she spoke, her family, friends and neighbors listened because her wisdom and discernment were unmatched. And when she cooked, there was no seat at the table or plate left empty because her door and her heart were always open, and her chicken and dumplings and banana pudding were absolutely unbeatable.
Doris was a creative and talented seamstress. She sewed countless clothes, curtains, pillows, purses, and quilts, and knew where to find the best fabrics at the lowest costs. Her talents extended to interior decorating for other people with a heart to help turn their houses into homes. Doris was also passionate about caring for people and stubborn for the causes she believed in.
Doris was a nurturer and had a true servant's heart. She put other's needs ahead of her own and put God's will first. She devoutly served her community and church. She was the first to show up to paint a room, clean a house, cook a meal, or watch kids. She was the first to offer prayers, a warm hug, and guidance to those hurting. She lacked in nothing because she held steadfast to her faith. She was a perfect and complete daughter of Christ and she taught and exemplified His commandment of love every single day.
To love a person is to learn the song that is in their heart and to sing it to them when they have forgotten. Doris sang to the hearts of all those she loved, and she leaves behind a legacy of humility and love.
Doris is survived by her children, Brad Butler, Diane Lewis, husband Bob; Brent Butler, wife Susan; Brenda Sauser, husband Bruce; her 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She also leaves many nieces and nephews that loved their Aunt Doris greatly. She is preceded in death by her husband Reggie of 65 years, her parents Jesse Batson Bass and Lillian Hattie Bass, stepmother Mary Bass, daughter-in-law Robin Butler and sisters Gwen, Wanda, and Patricia.
