Betty J. Kershaw "Nana", age 82, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2015, surrounded by her closest loved ones. She was born July 23, 1932 to Walter and Jewel Holmes. Betty was devoted to her faith, family and friends. Every family member held a special place in her heart. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Dorothy Schinzler, Wilma Bailey, Ellen Pyle, and Helen Gace; brothers, J. W. Holmes, John Holmes, and Walter Holmes, Jr.; grandson, Tyler Kershaw; and her dearest friend of over 30 years, Karen Myers, who provided companionship and gracious care up until her passing in January. She is survived by sisters, Juanita Ellison (Doyle) and Doris Zenona (Eli); brother, Harold Holmes; sons, Robert Kershaw (Marsha) and Richard Kershaw (Debbie); daughter, Sandra Kershaw-Denby; grandchildren, Beth Kershaw-Cammarn (Kelby), Richard Kershaw II (Melinda), Diana and Jonathan Denby (Mary), and Austin Kershaw (Kristi); great-grandchildren, Alexis "Lexi" King, Reece Cammarn, and Jolee and Lily Kershaw; her children's father, Ezube "Shorty" Kershaw; three generations of nieces and nephews; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren through marriage, Misty (Danny), Melanie (David), Skeet (Leah), Michelle (Steve), Marinna, Mason, Lourdes, Luke, Emily, Sunny, Tyler, Stephanos, Aliyah, and Danny. Also, left to cherish her memory are extended family and friends Judy Kunz (Perry, Peyton and Anthony), Stephen Denby (Karlene), Floyd King, and Dorothy Harrison. Betty and former husband, Ezube, owned and operated Island Machine Works in Galveston until 1980. She retired in 1999 from the Galveston Independent School District after 30 years of service as a bus driver. After retirement, she continued driving for Texas A&M Galveston and Kids R Kids in League City. Betty's wit, laughter and smile touched her family, friends and even strangers. She was a skilled water skier and snow-skied until the age of 72. She was an avid fisherman from the back of her previous Offatts Bayou home, a card player, and an unwavering professional football fan. Betty was a devoted bowler for over 30 years, even making her way into the Hall of Fame. She was a diehard amateur softball fan, spending countless nights and weekends at a ball field somewhere. Betty always joked that she and her 10 siblings could field their own baseball team. A memorial service to honor Betty will be held Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Forest Park East, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, TX. The family will receive visitors from 5:00-8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Betty requests donations be made to League City United Methodist Church at 1411 W. Main Street, League City, TX 77573. The family wishes to thank the Hospice Care Team and Right at Home for their excellent services and support. Special appreciation is given to Shelly Foley who cared for Betty with the upmost respect and compassion during her last few months. To honor Betty's wishes, her final months/days were spent in the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Debbie, with the help of granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Beth and Lexi.
