Lawrence "Larry" David Walther died peacefully on September 7, 2024, of natural causes. Born in Westchester, New York, on November 11, 1931, he was the son of John and Elizabeth, and brother of Jack, twin-brother Kenneth, and Roger.
Larry was a United States Marine Corp Veteran, having served in Korea with his brothers Jack and Kenneth. He obtained the rank of Sergeant with three battle stars. Upon returning from Korea, Larry became a successful retail display designer in New York City. After about a dozen years, he moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and opened a seashell shop, where he created and sold his unique, award-winning seashell creations, some of which are now museum pieces. It was there that he met his life-partner James “Jim” Howe. After a number of years working in the shop together, Larry and Jim moved to Western North Carolina, eventually settling in Waynesville. Larry continued his crafting, becoming a well-known quilter, pine-needle basket weaver, and ornament maker. Larry was a long-standing member of Dogwood Crafters in Dillsboro, NC, where he helped the artisan cooperative grow for nearly forty years. He designed and donated a quilt to raise funds for Dogwood Crafters annually for many of those years.
Larry is survived by his stepson Jim Howe, six nieces and nephews, twelve great nieces and nephews, and many long-time friends.
Larry will be missed dearly by all.
There will be no memorial service, but condolences can be expressed by donating to Dogwood Crafters at PO Box 604, Dillsboro, NC 28725, on Larry’s behalf.
