Born January 5, 1972 in Waynesboro, he was the son of Cheryl (Lunney) Johnson and the late Randolph Rea “Bucky” Lang, Jr.
Matt was a 1990 graduate of Albemarle High School and later a graduate of Virginia Tech. He was an avid golfer and managed his family’s golf course, Swannanoa Golf & Country Club, Afton. As a music enthusiast, he greatly enjoyed making music with friends where he was the lead singer, played bass guitar and drums for Lang Brothers as they performed at local area venues. He will be remembered as a loving son, father, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, and friend to many.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Randolph Rea “Pete” and Sarah Lang; and maternal grandfather, Thomas W. Lunney.
Survivors include his mother, Cheryl (Lunney) Johnson and husband, Clifford of Earlysville, Va; children, Hunter, Madalyn Avery, Lila Grace and their mother, Ashley Marshall all of Shallotte, SC, and Hannah Mae Marrero of Spain; three grandchildren, Silas, Ransom, and Theo Matthias; maternal grandmother, Violet L. Lunney of Earlysville, Va; brother, Eric Lang and wife, Jackie of Waynesboro; sister, Leah Westenberger and fiancé, Tim Dunbar of Ruckersville, Va; girlfriend, Kayla Metcalf of Afton; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St., Waynesboro.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Riverview Cemetery, 420 Rosser Ave., Waynesboro. All who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Robbie Kline, Mike Billings, Larry “Tippy” Thompson, Chad Wilfong, Dave Thomas, and Paul Cline.
