He retired as the Director of the Wayne State University Student Center in 2011. Michael lived his life to the fullest and was a strong an honorable man who was loyal and trustworthy. His passions included volunteerism, painting (MFA 1986), dancing, singing, anything Motown, traveling and tennis. Always smiling, you couldn’t help but love him from the first moment you met him. His light shined on the countless number of students whom he quietly mentored during his tenures at WSU and at the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Professionally, Michael was honored with numerous awards which included the WSU Homer D. Strong Award for distinguished leadership and service and the Gretchen Laatsch Outstanding Service Award from the Association of College Unions International and a WSU Presidential Bonus Award for painting large scale murals in two buildings at WSU. He was never at a loss for energy when it came time to volunteer for the American Red Cross or at countless WSU events like Commencement, Scholars Day, Motor City Makeover, Homecoming, Grad Expo and Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Day. In addition to serving as a WSU Alumni Association Board Member, he was also a weekend art instructor at Sacred Art Church.
Married on November 12, 2012, he is survived by his true love, Christina (Basso) Bowen and siblings Jerene Calhoun, Cora Threet, Sharon Porter, Linda Blakely, Paul Dexter Bowen and Victor Bowen.
