Don is survived by his children Jessica Shafer, Joel (Kaileigh) Shafer; “Papa” to Hannah, Haley, Hudson, Harper, Haiden, Henley; brother-in-law, Wayne Moore; sister, Karen (Jerry) Hendrick; brothers Ron Shafer, Doug (Chris) Shafer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Don was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Raymond Bechtold; sister, Kay Moore; nephew, Michael Moore; and sister-in-law, Judy Shafer.
Don was one of the most personable and loving people that we had the privilege of knowing. He could hold a conversation with anyone whom he came into contact. His pride and joy was being a “papa” to his grandchildren. You could catch him every weekend at the one of the many sporting events, cheering on his grandkids. He loved his family dinners, chicken, and a cup of coffee. His heart of gold will leave a “Don-sized” hole in our hearts.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family will be having a private memorial at a later date. In memory of Donald and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the VFW – Wayland Post #7581.
