Joseph Donald Quirion, also known as “Joe’ or “Don”, 81, passed away after a long term battle with heart disease on December 13, 2011 at MGMC Thayer Unit with his loving family by his side. He was also a two time survivor of cancer.
He was born in Winslow on March 3, 1930; a son of the late Josephat and Mathilda (Ferland) Quirion. He graduated from Winslow High School Class of 1947. Joseph served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, he was awarded the Korean Service medal with three Bronze Service Stars. After his time in the service he married Geraldine Bolduc on July 5, 1952. Together they had five children.
Joseph was a very loving and devoted husband, father, Pepere and old Pepere. He played an active role in Little League when his children were young. After retirement Joseph took on part time work at the Waterville Pleasant St. Albert S. Hall Elementary School, which he absolutely enjoyed. He loved being with the children and had once said that it was so rewarding had he known he would have worked there all his life. He greatly enjoyed gardening. Joseph was an active communicant of Corpus Christi Parish, a member of the MacCrillis Rousseau Post # 8835 in Winslow, AA for 46 years and the Sunshine Club (for the visually impaired).
He is survived by his loving wife Geraldine Quirion of 59 years, 5 children; Jerome Quirion of Waterville, Patrick Quirion of Benton, Carl Quirion and wife Janet of Winslow, Jane Deschaine and husband Martin of NH, and Gary Quirion and wife Anne of Scarborough, 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 3 sisters; Joanne Young and husband Raymond of Winslow, Wilma Carey and Laurette Quirion both of Winslow as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Joseph was predeceased by his parents and a brother Norman Quirion.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John’s Catholic Church in Winslow, on December 20, 2011 at 9am, committal to follow with military honors at Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery on Mt. Vernon Rd. in Augusta at 2pm. The family wishes to extend grateful heartfelt thank you to the staffs at the Harold Alfond Cancer Center in Augusta and to the Togus VA Regional Hospital for the exceptional love and care provided to Joseph and his family.
