WATERVILLE -- Daniel G. Dunbar, 90, died Oct. 10, 2013, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center. Daniel was born in Winslow, Nov. 10, 1922, a son of Harry and Charlotte (Marcoux) Dunbar. Daniel lived all his life in Winslow, graduating from Winslow High School in 1940. He was very proud of his parents, who were Winslow town clerks for 45 years; first his father, followed by his mother. Daniel worked at Scott Paper Co., walking to work every day, and he never missed a day of work in 44 years.
Daniel was also a World War II veteran of the Army. He went to war in Europe on the Queen Mary serving as a gunner on the ship. In Europe, he drove a half-track truck in the 3rd Armored Division of the 1st Army. After the war, he stayed in Germany for three months delivering supplies all over Germany for the Red Ball Express, working under a German colonel. Daniel always had a lot of great stories that he told his family about his time in Germany. His grandsons were especially fascinated and took notes and made maps of this time. Daniel was an avid Yankees fan who loved watching baseball games, especially when the Red Sox lost.
Daniel was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Robert Dunbar.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Madelyn Dunbar; his son, Dr. Paul Dunbar, and wife Robin, of Winslow; daughters Bonnie Dunbar, of Winslow, and Rebecca Dunbar, of Standish; grandsons Daniel, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Peter, of Burlington, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Veilleux Funeral Home, 8 Elm St., Waterville; followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Monument Street, Winslow. Interment will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.
