Bill Finneran, of Friendship Heights, Maryland, passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, after a long illness. Bill grew up in a variety of places but mainly in Falls Church and Norfolk, Va. Most of his adult life was spent in the DC area living in Falls Church, Arlington and Chevy Chase. Bill had a long career as a cost analyst for EG&G on Navy Submarine electronics programs. His work was integral for the financial health of submarines constructed from the 1980s until the current Virginia Class platforms. Prior to EG&G, Bill spent six years on active duty as a Navy Electronics technician. He held a B.S. degree in Statistics from Virginia Tech as well as a Certified Financial Planning certificate from Texas A&M and previously held a 1st Class FCC license. Bill traveled to almost all the states and to all seven continents (eight for any Kiwi’s). He was an avid golfer and a skilled tournament backgammon player. Bill was active in the community performing volunteer work for years with St George’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, the AARP Tax Aide program, the Northern Virginia Backgammon Club and the DC chapter of the American Singles Golf association. Bill was one of the founding sponsors of the US Backgammon Federation and of the “Kim Igoe Endowment” in support of Hampton’s Throne, one of America’s greatest works of visionary art on display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. (“SAAM”).
He is survived by his four siblings, Pat Diepold, John Finneran, Sharon Manto, and Katie Avsec, along with his granddaughter Veda, eight nieces and nephews; and seven (so far) grand nieces and nephews, as well as a former spouse, Sherrian. He is preceded in death by daughter, Laura Ann, his Life Partner Kim Igoe, as well as his parents, Jack and Lillian (nee McNamara) Finneran.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2023 from 12:00pm until 2:00pm at Joseph Gawler's Sons Funeral Home 5130 Wisconsin Ave. NW Washington, DC 20016.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kim Igoe Endowment at SAAM.
