William Lester Eldred, 72, of Washington, D.C., passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Born on December 22, 1946, in Terre Haute, Indiana, William “Bill” was loved by many across the country. Bill was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and North Western University. Immediately following graduation from North Western University, he became a Navy officer, proudly serving his country for twenty years, achieving the rank of Commander.
Bill was an avid roller coaster fanatic. He, along with his husband, Frank, traveled the world with other like-minded enthusiasts that were able to gain access to all the inside workings of many different roller coasters and parks worldwide. When he wasn’t planning the next adventure, Bill enjoyed spending quiet moments at home with his husband and their two Havanese dogs, Rufus and Chumley.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Mabel E. and William M. Eldred. He is survived by his husband, Frank J. Wellner, and his children Meg G. Eldred (William Barcus) and Morgen W. Eldred (Jackie). He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Angel Chege, Charles Madjeski, Shannon Madjeski, Kieren Eldred, Jasmine Barcus, Brandon Barcus, and Dakota Barcus. His ex-wife, Barbara Eldred and many cousins and close friends also brought joy to his life.
A memorial service will be held at National City Christian Church, 5 Thomas Circle NW, Washington, DC 20005 on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 1:00 PM. William’s final resting place will be at the Church by the Sea in Madeira Beach, Florida, where there will be a private interment ceremony.
