Born in Richmond, VA, and raised in Bethesda, MD, Tom graduated from Walter Johnson High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1973.
For over forty-five years, Tom dedicated his career to the banking industry, becoming a cornerstone of the local banking community. He was deeply committed to his staff and customers, retiring in 2016 from United Bank (former Bank of Georgetown), where he supported the Washington, DC area branches.
A passionate history buff, and avid gardener, Tom spent his retirement traveling with his wife and cherishing moments with his children and grandchildren. His faith as a devout Anglican guided him throughout his life and he took immense pride in his love for his church, country, community, and music.
Tom is survived by his wife, Gisela, his daughter, Andrea and son-in-law John of Baltimore, MD, his son, Thomas and daughter-in-law Britta of Potomac, MD, granddaughters Anna and Sophia, his sister Judith and brother-in-law Michael, brother-in-law Robert, and nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents Thomas Elton Whinerey and Ethel Williams, and sister Diane Whinerey MacDonald.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal friend, but most of all a doting “Opa” to his granddaughters. Tom had a remarkable ability to bring joy to those around him, often with laughter, jokes, and his passion for playing the piano.
His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
