I remember the great Geezer dinners  of Washington Post reporters that Mike put together. It was a time of gathering preCovid . He and some of our colleagues who have also passed on are so missed. 


an extraordinarily decent man of great integrity. as the irish say, he was a mensch. as the jews say, he was a grand fellow.

Dear Sandi, Warren and Belinda,

Tony, Jean, Gigi and I were so very sorry to hear about Mike’s passing.  My dad considered him a terrific colleague and my parents really valued your friendship over the years.  My siblings and I will always be grateful for the kindness you showed my folks when they were in poor health.  Mike’s obituary is a real testament to a value filled life well lived.  Please accept our deepest sympathies.

Dear Sandi, 

We will always treasure the memories of living across the street from you and Mike on South Lee Street in Old Town.  You and Mike were always so kind.

When our first child, Max, arrived from Korea in April 1989 Mike was as excited as we were.  He treasured his role as a father and was thrilled that we would have the opportunity to be parents. It was particularly cold in early April that year but Mike conducted a photo shoot of Max outdoors, wanting the benefit of natural light and the backdrop of an old brick wall.  He was delighted by children.

We loved talking with Mike about the international events of the day.  We would listen for the delivery of the Washington Post for Mike's review around 11 o'clock every night and look forward to talking with Mike about what it all meant and where the world was heading.  What a keen mind and a compassionate heart he had.  A wonderful sense of irony too.

We were privileged to have known Mike and will always remember him.

Dear Sandi, Warren and Belinda,
Mike will always be dear to me and remembered with genuine love and respect. It was my good fortune that he hired me as his assistant on the foreign news desk. He was one of my the best teachers. I learned from his  example, not only what it meant to have journalistic integrity, but to value each individual’s talents and qualities.  The intersection of our paths changed the trajectory of my life and I will always be grateful. He was  a beautiful soul, a loving Spirit. So happy he shined his Light on me. Condolences from my heart to yours. 


Dear Sandi,
I am very sorry to hear this news, and remember Mike as a terrific colleague and friend.  The journalism part speaks for itself - a strong and unwavering curiosity, and an absolute dedication to finding out whatever is true in any particular instance.   But there is also his warmth and an instinctive ability to be genuine, a wise and gentle soul  who showed you rather than told you.  I count it my great good fortune that he was part of my life; an indelible memory of shared and valuable experiences.  My deepest sympathy to you and yours.
