FOWLER GORDON FOWLER A resident of Washington, D.C., died suddenly on Saturday, January 10, 2015 of cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife, Carol J. Carmody, his three daughters, Hilary Misson Roschke of Gaithersburg, MD, Andrea Wootten-Fowler Hidalgo and Harriet Margaret Fowler, of Silver Spring, MD; grandchilden Mason Fowler Hidalgo and Elise Maria Hidalgo; sister Terry Fowler Fiumi of Santa Monica, CA, and brother, Eric Raymond Fowler of Manassas, VA. Gordon was born on October 11, 1940, in Coronado, CA, to Gordon Fowler, US Naval Officer, and Elaine Wootten Fowler. He spent his early years in California, and Rhode Island. When his father received orders for London, Gordon was enrolled in Newell's School in Sussex, England, where he spent most of his grammar school years. He graduated from Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts in 1958. He thought his prowess there in soccer and swimming helped get him accepted at Dartmouth College, where he was an All-American swimmer. He earned a BA in Government there in 1963. He received an MA in International Affairs from American University in 1966. Gordon retired in 2007 as an International Relations Officer at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). He coordinated the US-Soviet Committee established after the Chernobyl accident, and thereafter managed the nuclear safety assistance to the Soviet, and later Russian and Ukrainian nuclear regulators. Early in his career Gordon worked under an MIT contract in South Vietnam and travelled the country assessing hamlet security, the primary tool used for planning military strategy. He was removed from S. Vietnam just 6 days befofre the 1968 Tet Offensive. He also worked at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard analyzing international trade data. Gordon raised his children in Bethesda, and coached them in soccer and swimming. He enjoyed teaching swimming to young children for many years at Chevy Chase Recreational Association, where he was active on the Board and served as President. He was an avid tennis player and met his wife, Carol, in Washington through tennis. They married in March, 2010. Gordon loved the outdoors, in particular the Chesapeake Bay where he sailed for many years. His family and friends will remember him and treasure his memory as a gentle and loving husband and father, a kind friend, a thoughtful neighbor, and an enthusiastic athlete.
