After visits with his beloved children, grandchildren, and nephews, Dr. Edward Cornelius Werner died peacefully at his home in Washington, DC on January 6th, 2022 after a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Georgia Gogos Antonoplos for 24 years, and previously Amanda McBath Sprenger (deceased) for 28 years.
Born in Brooklyn, New York to Dr. Aaron S. and Mrs. Elizabeth (Betty) C. Werner, he grew up on Ocean Avenue across from Prospect Park, whose beautiful grounds he often roamed as a child. His sister, Wendy, and her husband, Joe McManus, survive him. His brother, Anthony Seth Werner, MD, and his grandson, Peter Adolfo Rotondo, predeceased him.
Dr. Werner was a graduate of Brooklyn Prep, Yale University, and the University of Maryland Medical School. He had a private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology for 27 years in the Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC area. Hospitals he served include Georgetown University Hospital (Clinical Associate Professor), Greater Southeast Community Hospital (Chief of Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology 1979-1982), Alexandria (VA) Hospital, Southern Maryland Hospital Center, Fort Washington Hospital Center, and Mount Vernon Hospital. He was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American College of Surgeons, the American Fertility Society, the District of Columbia Medical Society, and the Prince Georges County Medical Society.
Dr. Werner was active for many years in the Yale Club of Washington, DC (President, 1988-1989, 1993-1994), the Pan American Medical Society (Treasurer, 1990-1991; President, 1994-1995), and the Washington Gynecological Society (Vice President, 1998-2002; President, 2002-2003). He was a very spiritual and faithful Catholic, attending daily mass and serving as Lector and leader of Novena prayers at multiple parishes.
Ed will be remembered for his love of life, family, friends, the Church, his patients and nursing staff, travel, football, spending time with his wife Georgia and family at Rehoboth Beach, music and musical theater, and good food. In his medical practice as well as in daily chores he injected his joie de vivre, whistling or singing a tune which preceded his warm, cheerful presence while he walked down the hallways in the hospital or the aisle at the grocery store or as he moved around his office in Oxon Hill, MD. Notably, he will be remembered for initiating a rousing chorus singing Happy Birthday to each baby he delivered in the delivery room.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia, his children Lesley Krauland (Ed), Mary Ellen Rotondo (Richard), Anthony, and Adrienne Roughgarden (Kevin), his stepson Peter Antonoplos (Valerie), and ten grandchildren (William, Sam, Grace, James, Christian, Edward, Lilly, Gigi, David, and Daniel).
A Resurrection Funeral Mass will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church in Washington, DC (3810 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016) on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/.
